Inspire – High potential and gifted education

At Shortland Public School our focus is sharp and ambitious: unlocking the high potential of every individual student. Not a program for some, but a promise for all. We are committed to personalised learning, extension opportunities and rich experiences that inspire students to aim higher than they thought possible. Our inclusive and supportive learning environment challenges and extends all students, encouraging them to appreciate the diverse strengths within their community and to strive toward personal excellence.

We embed the principles of the HPGE policy throughout our school programs, ensuring that all students understand the importance of valuing potential—in themselves and others—and are inspired to grow across multiple domains. This approach empowers students to see giftedness as multidimensional, encompassing academic, creative, physical and social-emotional strengths.

Our focus is on four broad domains:

We collaborate with families, our school community, and the wider community, and engage in ongoing professional learning to build teacher capability and enhance growth and achievement for all high potential and gifted students. Through these actions, our teachers are dedicated to being the catalyst for high performance and talent development for every student.

At Shortland Public School, HPGE is not just a policy—it is a fundamental part of how we nurture the potential of every student, encouraging a shared understanding that potential comes in many forms and should be valued by all. Through this holistic, student-centered approach, we prepare our learners for success, happiness and lifelong growth.

What is high potential and gifted education?

Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school and across NSW.

In our classroom

Our Inspire – High potential and gifted education approach is intentionally designed to identify, challenge and extend high-achieving students, creating clear pathways from potential to excellence.

Learning experiences are strategically differentiated to increase pace, depth and complexity, supported by precise formative assessment that ensures students are consistently stretched. We explicitly teach advanced critical thinking, problem-solving and metacognitive strategies, enabling students to analyse, evaluate and create at high levels.

Students engage in authentic, choice-driven learning, including rich cross-curricular projects that promote innovation and real-world application. Classrooms operate as high-expectation learning communities, with flexible grouping that supports collaboration, challenge and high-quality presentation.

In PDHPE, students participate in purposefully differentiated skill refinement, with targeted goals to accelerate coordination, agility and control. Opportunities to take on lead and expert roles—such as modelling techniques, leading team strategy or mentoring peers—develop confidence and leadership.

Through strengths-based feedback, rigorous goal setting and structured peer reflection, students are supported to move beyond high achievement towards sustained excellence.

Across our school

Our school provides a wide range of opportunities that extend learning, nurture talent and develop the whole child.

Students are encouraged to challenge themselves through academic competitions, critical thinking workshops and public speaking, while choir, music ensembles, and visual arts and drama showcase provide rich avenues for creative expression and performance.

A strong sporting culture is fostered through school sporting teams, swimming and athletics carnivals, house competitions and performance-based movement groups, alongside targeted workshops in areas such as football and gymnastics.

Leadership, wellbeing and connection are strengthened through peer mentoring, student leadership opportunities and dedicated wellbeing programs, with students actively participating in whole-school inclusion and wellbeing initiatives.

Learning is further enriched through environmental excursions and sustainability-focused activities, offering hands-on experiences that build understanding of ecosystems, wildlife and responsible environmental practices.

Across NSW

Across NSW public schools, students benefit from a range of high-quality Department of Education programs that extend learning, talent and wellbeing.

The Premier’s Spelling Bee strengthens vocabulary development and attention to detail through engaging academic competition, while the Premier’s Reading Challenge builds strong literacy outcomes by fostering a positive, school-wide reading culture.

The Premier’s Sporting Challenge promotes whole-school participation in physical activity, offering clear leadership pathways and professional learning for staff. Creative talents are celebrated through Star Struck, an iconic performing arts event that showcases the diversity and creativity of students from public schools across the Hunter.

For students with sporting potential, Representative PSSA pathways provide opportunities to trial and compete at regional, state and national levels, developing discipline, commitment and collaboration.
