Newcastle University

At Shortland Public School, we have established strong, profressional relationships with both the Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy faculties within Newcastle University.

Throughout the year, University students from each faculty work under the guidance of a qualified therapist, with our teachers to support our students.

The occupational therapy program aims to help kids develop skills such as fine and gross motor skills, handwriting and typing skills, self-regulation skills, social skills, and sensory processing skills. Enhancing these skills allows kids to “show what they know”, and experience greater success, enjoyment and independence in the classroom and on the playground.

We offer a variety of services including screening assessments, whole classroom intervention (such as Write Start for handwriting in K-2 and sessions focusing on social-emotional skills throughout K-6), and more targeted intervention for identified students (though collaboration with the educator, parents/carers and learning support team).
