About our school

Our school's history

An application was made for the establishment of a public school as Sandgate in July 1925, but the Education Department declined this request.

In 1927, an application was approved to conduct classes in the newly constructed Methodist Hall. Classes commenced in September 1927, Mr. J. Strange teaching the 43 enrolments. Some land was donated and other land purchased, and a new school building was erected. The Sandgate School was opened on 2nd August 1930. The head master was Mr. W.D Smith and his assistant teacher was Miss Gray.

It was considered that the name Shortland would be more appropriate, and the name was officially changed on 29th June 1932. Mr Smith remained at the school until November 1946. He is credited with choosing the school colours of green and white, and introducing the school motto - 'Truth and Endeavour'.

In 1955 the Infants Department was erected, comprising two classrooms, and was officially opened in 1962. The current building was erected in 1974, and officially opened on 29th October 1975. A school hall was built and opened in 2001. The hall was named after long serving Principal Ivan Guyer who retired soon after.

At Shortland Public School, we are proud of ourselves, our achievements and our school.

Our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) team is committed to promoting an environment that values Respect, Responsibility and Relationships, and assisting teachers and our community to:

  • Increase the consistent use of positive teaching and reinforcement strategies among all school staff at school-wide, classroom and individual student levels
  • Increase the use of proactive strategies
  • Reduce the use of reactive disciplinary measures in our school for all students
  • Increase data-based decision making about behaviour, teaching and learning, across all school settings
  • Implement wide range of supports and interventions for students with behaviour and emotional needs
  • Facilitate a commitment to achievement
  • Build a foundation for life-long learning
  • Provide an environment where all students can achieve

What is PBL?

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole school approach to proactive, school-wide behaviour management.

It is applied research and evidence based practices and strategies for all students to increase academic performance, improve safety, decrease problem behaviour, and establish a positive school culture.

Everyone, Everywhere, All the Time!

PBL is a program supported by Shortland Public School to promote and maximise academic achievement and behavioural competence. We know that when good behaviour choices and good teaching come together, our students can excel in their learning. Our school is proud to be part of this exciting initiative.

As a part of the PBL process, we have established three values - Respect, Responsibility and Relationships (see below). Within these values, are three clear rules or "behaviour expectations" we expect in all areas of our school. We are explicitly teaching these expectations to the students in PBL lessons and reward them frequently with positive acknowledgement for their great behaviour.

We are proud of ourselves, our achievements and our school.

I show:

  • Respect - By caring for property, following instructions and wearing my uniform.
  • Responsibility - By learning and playing safely.
  • Relationships - By using manners, including others and being kind.

We believe that by helping students practise good behaviour, we will build a school community where all students have an environment where they can succeed and grow.
